Senior News*CALENDAR OF EVENTS & DEADLINES FOR SENIORS Class of 2012* Student Film FestivalIt was standing room only in the Baldwin Park High School cafeteria on Thursday evening, April 5th. Students, families, and teachers were all there to take part in the school’s first student film festival which was a huge success. The theme for the film festival was “The World through My Eyes.” Students submitted original films that were between 5 and 10 minutes long. The top six films were screened that night. Trophies and prizes were given out to the top three. The audience also participated by voting for their favorite film which was awarded “Honorable Mention.” The movies covered a variety of topics such as, the effects of the recession, falling in love, and the negative aspects of using cell phones. The film festival was sponsored in part by the Latino Film Fund, and freshfilms.com. This event was the first of its kind for the high school, as well as, the city of Baldwin Park, and possibly the entire East San Gabriel Valley area. The event was organized and hosted by GAMA House (Global Action through Media Arts). Because of the overwhelming interest in the event, the GAMA House is considering opening it up to all teens in the entire city next year. The winning filmmakers of this year’s film festival are Yahir Barrigan (Honorable Mention), Alan Santellanes (3rd Place), Jose Perez (2nd Place), and Robert Martinez (1st Place).

The His-Lai temple, located in Hacienda Heights, has some of the best Chinese New Year decorations and historical preserves in Southern California. On this trip, our students learned many lessons about the Chinese culture and religion. In addition, the Mandarin Chinese class enjoyed traditional Chinese New Year meat-free meal hosted in the temple. Eating a vegetarian dish on the first day of the New Year is considered good karma. Students also applied their Mandarin Chinese language skills by using phrases for greetings, giving thanks, and wishing one a happy new year. It was an amazing experience for many.
